Population of Rajasthan : According to Census 2011

  • Ancient period :-
    • Information about the census conducted in India in 800-600 BC is available from the early literature ‘Rigveda’.
    • Information about the census conducted in the Maurya period is available from ‘Arthashastra’ written by Chanakya.
  • Middle period : Information about the census conducted during the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar in the Mughal period is available from ‘Ain-e-Akbari’ written by Abul Fazal.
  • The first modern census in India was conducted in 1872 AD during the rule of Governor General Lord Mayo.
  • The first systematic and decadal census in India was conducted on 17 February 1881 by the Census Commissioner of India ‘W.C. Plowden’ during the rule of Lord Ripon.
  • The first caste census was conducted in India in 1931 AD.
  • The “Population Census Act” was passed in India in 1948 AD.
  • In 1993, the “National Population Commission” was formed in India.
  • Census in India is a subject of the Union List.
  • Census is included in the 7th Schedule of the Constitution.
  • Census is conducted by the ‘Census Department’ of the Home Ministry of India.

    • First phase : 15 May to 30 June, 2010
    • Second phase : 9 February to 28 February, 2011

  • Total population of India: 121.085 crores
  • Rajasthan has 1% of the total population of the world.
  • Rajasthan has 5.67% of the total population of India.
  • According to the Census 2011, Rajasthan ranks 8th in India in terms of population. But after the division of Andhra Pradesh, it is currently ranked 7th.
  • Infant population (0-6 years) is 15.56% of the total population of Rajasthan.
